Santia is the only laboratory in the UK which is UKAS accredited to undertake fibre discrimination using a combination of Phased Contrast Microscopy (PCM) and Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM). Developed in-house by our Technical Manager, our unique method allows us to take asbestos air monitoring one step further and discriminate between non-asbestiform and asbestiform fibres in a standard airborne monitoring sample.
This is particularly useful in cases where it is thought that the control limit may have been breached. As routine fibre counting using only PCM, all fibres which meet the WHO counting rules are counted if they fit the criteria, even if they are non-asbestos. This means that a test result could exceed the control limit whilst the number of asbestos fibres hasn’t. Fibre discrimination can therefore provide important supplementary information in the event of an uncontrolled release of asbestos.
