– Amy Jones, Business Development Manager
Universities own large property portfolios comprising listed buildings through to newly constructed state of the art accommodation blocks and specialist teaching facilities. A large proportion of most University buildings will contain asbestos, as any building constructed or refurbished before 1999 may contain this hazardous material. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 place a ‘duty to manage asbestos’ on those responsible for managing and maintaining buildings. Universities therefore are defined as ‘Dutyholders’ and are legally required to prevent asbestos exposure in their buildings. The sheer size of each portfolio combined with occupancy, location (often inner city) and ambitious plans to redevelop campuses in order to attract the best students increase the challenges associated with asbestos management. As a result, the higher education sector has established systems in place, with specially trained Asbestos Managers, databases, processes and procedures to ensure that asbestos is managed safely. Asbestos testing and surveying however is a highly regulated industry within the complex field of asbestos management. Universities therefore have a need to outsource these specialist services to companies like Santia who have UKAS accreditation to ensure that the highest standards of quality are maintained in our laboratories and the field. Santia have a proven track record in the higher education sector and have retained contracts with a number of Universities for many years. Our reputation for service excellence, technical expertise and effective project management were all factors which contributed to Santia being awarded a place on this framework. If you are an SUPC member and would like to access our services, we are appointed on the following Lots: Lot 3 – South West, South and Mid Wales, Lot 5 – North Midlands and Lot 6 – North of England. Service Contracts are already agreed and signed and we may enter into a contract with any of the SUPC members directly. If you would like to find out more, please contact us referencing SUPC. Alternatively, if you are not yet a member of the SUPC but would like to find out more here https://www.supc.ac.uk/
I am delighted to announce that Santia have been awarded a place on the new Southern Universities Purchasing Consortium (SUPC) framework for Asbestos Consultancy and Associated Services. We look forward to helping more Universities maintain a safe working environment during the day to day management of their portfolio, and during the extensive refurbishments which are underway in the higher education sector across the UK.
